Today, I am reading and commenting on 2 Chronicles 19-22.
When Jehoshaphat, King of Judah, returned to Jerusalem after accompanying King Ahab of Israel into the battle where Ahab was killed, a prophet confronted him over his close friendship with the kings of Israel (who, at this point, were evil idolaters). While the prophet told Jehoshaphat that the wrath of God was on him, he also told him that there was some good in him. Inspired by this Jehoshaphat went out among the people and turned their hearts to God. When a few years later a vast army, larger than the army of Judah could hope to stand against, attacked Judah, Jehoshaphat called the people together to pray to God for deliverance. A different prophet came forward and told them not to be afraid or discouraged, for the battle was God’s not theirs to fight. This is advice we should take to heart. If we strive to serve the Lord, when enemies muster their forces to attack us, God will fight the battle for us. In this case, the army of Judah never needed to engage the enemy, the enemy armies turned on each other and wiped themselves out. The army of Judah was able to loot their camp without fighting a battle. That will not always be the way in which God deals with our problems, but we can be sure that He will do so if we put our faith in Him and strive to serve Him.
