January 1, 2023 Bible Study — Men And Women Are Equally To Blame For The Problems In This World

Today, I am reading and commenting on  Genesis 1-3.

It is so very appropriate to start the year with the Creation story(stories).  We really have two Creation stories here.  However, they are not in conflict, nor do they need to be reconciled because they are about two different things.  In chapter one we have the story about how the entire universe came to be, culminating in the creation of mankind.  I am convinced that the person who first told this story as we have it written down considered themselves to be living on the seventh day, when God rested from creating everything that is.

The second story is about how man came to be and how things came to be as those hearing the story saw the earth to be (and how we see the earth to be).  Today I want to focus on the eating of the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.  Before they ate from the tree, Adam and Eve were unable to do evil because they did not know what evil was.  The sin which Adam and Eve committed was to try and be like God.  When confronted by God about their wrongdoing, both Adam and Eve attempted to pass the blame to someone else: Adam blamed Eve, while Eve blamed the serpent.  Interestingly, Eve was not present when God gave the command not to eat the fruit from that particular tree as she had not yet been created (and while I do not think we should put very much theological thought into woman being created after man, I do believe that Eve being created after Adam has a lot to do with understanding the meaning of this story).  And, quite simply, Adam does not really have an out of blaming Eve for picking the fruit and then giving it to him.  Adam was there the entire time while the serpent attempted to convince Eve to eat from the tree.  As for Eve, even though she was not present when God gave the command not to eat the fruit, she knew that He had given that command.  Eve did not share the fruit with Adam because it was so tasty, rather she did so in order to share the blame with him.  To put it simply, Adam and Eve (man and woman) are equally to blame for the sinful state of mankind.

December 31, 2022 Bible Study — The Last Day Will Come Soon

Today, I am reading and commenting on  Revelation 20-22.

I can never quite figure out how the thousand year reign described here fits with the other prophecies about Jesus’ Second Coming in other New Testament books (that does not mean I think it is in contradiction with them, just that I cannot understand how they fit together).  However, one part makes sense to me: the resurrection of those who were martyred for their faith in Christ.  These were those who had not worshiped the beast or received its mark.  The passage says that they will be blessed above and beyond those who are also faithful but do not suffer death for their faith.  Then John writes about the second resurrection when all of the remaining dead shall rise in order to come before God for judgement.  On that day the books which record the deeds of everyone will be opened and all will be judged based on what they have done, except those whose names appear in the book of life.  Ultimately, those whose names are not written in the book of life will be thrown into the lake of fire, along with devil, and suffer the second death.

Then God will create a new universe, one which will not experience any of the flaws which the current universe has as a result of sin.  The new universe will have no death, nor mourning, nor pain of any sort.  Those who have truly given themselves to God will live in this new universe in the presence of God, walking with God as Adam and Eve walked with Him before they disobeyed.  On the last day of 2022 it is time to remember that the last day of this earth will come soon.  Let us serve God here while we still have the opportunity to do so.

December 30, 2022 Bible Study — The Woman And The Scarlet Beast

Today, I am reading and commenting on  Revelation 17-19.

I struggle with putting together a blog on today’s passage.  The passage speaks of the woman who sits on a scarlet beast.  The woman is described as both a prostitute and as ruling over the kings (governments) of the earth.  The woman abuses those who follow Christ (drinks their blood).  The beast existed in the past, did not (does not?) exist for a time, then exists once again.  The heads and horns of the beast are kings (governments) who give their power to the beast.  Together the kings and the beast make war on Christ and His followers, but Christ will be victorious over them.  Despite sharing an animosity towards the Christians with her, the beast and its kings will hate the woman and seek her destruction.  The beast will succeed in destroying the woman, to the dismay of the kings who gave their support to the beast in her destruction.

I can see this prophecy reflected in the world today, although I am unsure that it is being fulfilled now.  As a side note, I believe that God intends for each generation to perceive aspects of the prophecies contained in the Book of Revelation as coming to fulfillment in the events they witness.  So, how could this prophecy apply today?  The woman would be the United States government.  The beast would be the various international organizations supported by world governments (if you look at these organizations, most of them share common goals and have overlapping governing boards).  These organizations all seem to hate the United States, yet all of the world would suffer badly if the United States was destroyed.  These organizations, and the U.S. government, are hostile to those who faithfully follow Christ.

December 29, 2022 Bible Study — The Seal Of God Vs. The Mark Of The Beast

Today, I am reading and commenting on  Revelation 13-16.

When the dragon gives its power to the first beast, I am reminded of Jesus was tempted in the wilderness.  Both passages teach us that those who seek to transform the world using political power serve the devil.  As I read this, I am struck by the degree to which the stated goals of organizations such as the World Economic Forum (WEF) can be read as the same as the actions of the beast.  Understand, I am not saying that the WEF is either of these two beasts, just that an uncharitable reading of its goals can be seen as creating a government over the world like to the one attributed here to the two beasts.  I am aware that there were groups before the WEF which promoted the same ideas.  In fact, I believe that any attempt to harness political power to transform the world into a human concept of the perfect world will end up serving the devil, because accomplishing such a transformation will require people to worship, in place of God, the government (or whatever organization is carrying out this transformation).

The other interesting thing I see, which is something I have never noticed before, is the contrast between the mark of the beast and the seal of God.  Earlier in John’s vision he saw God’s seal being placed on the foreheads of those who served God.  In today’s passage, John sees those who had received that seal on their forehead again just after witnessing the second beast forcing everyone to get its mark on their forehead or hand in order to buy or sell anything.  To me it seems clear that those who serve God will be unable to get the mark of the beast because they already have God’s mark on their forehead.  Perhaps the most important part about this comparison between marks is that God places His seal on the foreheads of His servants before the arrival of the beast.

December 28, 2022 Bible Study — The Fifth And Sixth Trumpets

Today, I am reading and commenting on  Revelation 9-12.

John writes that when the fifth trumpet is blown a star will fall from the sky to earth and be given the keys to the Abyss.  When the star opens the Abyss, smoke will rise out of it and darken the sky.  Locusts, which look like horses, will emerge and torture those who do not have God’s seal on their foreheads.  The angel of the Abyss, also known as The Destroyer (Abaddon in Hebrew, and Apollyon in Greek) , was king over these locusts with the sting of a scorpion.  Tradition holds that Abaddon is one of Satan’s fallen angels, but there is reason to connect Abaddon with the angel who killed the first-born of Egypt, and the angel who spread the plague over Israel after King David’s census.  If those other angels were serving God in bringing destruction, perhaps Abaddon is also.  In fact we have four more angels who carried forth destruction at God’s command after the sixth trumpet is blown.

Which brings me to something that I want to pull out for extra attention.  After the sixth trumpet is blown, the four angels are released and kill one third of all mankind by plagues of fire, smoke, and sulfur.  Yet, those who survived refused to repent of their sin and idolatry.  They did not turn from their murders, thefts, sexual immorality, or magic arts.  It strikes me as how true this is to human nature.  There have been several times in my lifetime when the actions of people led to suffering for many of those who performed those actions, yet others refused to stop taking the actions which increased the likelihood of suffering the same fate.  Likewise, we should remember this prophecy when trying to bring the Gospel to those around us: many of them will refuse to turn from their sin, even in the face of great suffering.

December 27, 2022 Bible Study — Worshiping God While His Perfect Plan Comes To Completion

Today, I am reading and commenting on  Revelation 4-8.

Yesterday I wrote that it is important that we pay attention to the symbolism in the Book of Revelation.  Today, my first thought was, “Why are there 24 elders?”  I tried to do an Internet search to see what others had thought and all I found were people discussing WHO those elders were.  While I can understand some people wondering who they were, I don’t think that who they are is important (if it was, John would have given us more information about that).  So, I then looked up what significance the number twenty-four has elsewhere in the Bible.  I found that David had divided those responsible for music in the Temple into twenty-four divisions and that the priesthood had also been divided into twenty-four divisions.  It also occurred to me that twenty-four is twice twelve.  Twelve being the number of tribes of Israel and the number of Apostles whom Jesus called while He was on earth.  Which leads me to conclude that the twenty-four elders appeared in this vision to remind us of the importance of worshiping God (the twenty-four divisions of musicians and twenty-four divisions of priests led the people of Israel in worship).

Then we have the scroll sealed with seven seals.  Now seven is the number of divine perfection.  Which explains why only the Lamb was worthy to open the scroll, because only the Lamb shared in divine perfection. Seven also carries the idea of completion.  The Children of Israel marched around Jericho for six days, then on the seventh day they marched around Jericho seven times with priests blowing on seven trumpets.  So, when the seventh seal was opened, revealing the completion of God’s plans for this world, seven trumpets were blown.  When the seventh trumpet was blown it indicated the completion of God’s perfect plan (although we do not get to that point in today’s passage).

So, let us worship God as His perfect plan moves to its perfect completion.

December 26, 2022 Bible Study — It Is Better To Be Enthusiastically Flawed, Than Lackadaisical

Today, I am reading and commenting on  Revelation 1-3.

It is important when we read the Book of Revelation to pay attention to the symbolism.  So, I want to note that seven churches in Asia Minor were chosen as the recipients for this letter because seven is the number of divine perfection.  Yet, these churches were not perfect.  I want to spend a little time looking at what was written to these seven churches.  John was given nothing negative to write about two of them, and nothing positive to say about two more.  Let’s look at what he wrote about the two churches about which John wrote only good things.  About one of those churches, the church in Smyrna, he writes that they are poor, but rich.  About the other, the church in Philadelphia, he writes that they are weak, but that God has opened a door for them that no one will be able to close.  In both cases, the message is that if we dedicate ourselves to serving God, we will succeed even though by the standards of this world we do not have the strength or resources to accomplish that for which we strive.  Now, let us look at the two churches about which he has nothing positive to write.  At the first of those, the church in Sardis, he writes that they have a reputation for being alive, but aren’t.  And about the church in Laodicea, he writes that they are neither hot nor cold, they are just indifferent.  Further, he says they are the opposite of the church in Smyrna…they think they are rich, when in fact they are poor.  In both cases the church had lost its first love for God and they were merely going through the motions.  John writes that it would be better to make no profession of faith than the half-hearted one they currently had, it would be better to be one of the three churches about which John writes both good and bad.  The churches about which John had nothing good to write had avoided the failings of the three churches about whom John gave mixed reviews. but they also failed to do any of those things for which he praised those churches.  We will be better off being enthusiastic disciples of Christ who fail in some areas, than lackadaisical ones who do nothing particularly wrong, but also nothing particularly right.

December 25, 2022 Bible Study — Loving One Another Is Opposite To Immorality

Today, I am reading and commenting on  2 John, 3 John, and Jude.

Merry Christmas

I am somewhat torn about trying to write a blog entry which discusses these three letters together.  We have two letters from John and a third from Jude.  On the one hand, the two letters from John have a similar writing style, and can thus be easily addressed together, while the letter from Jude covers a theme which is also covered in the first of these two letters from John.  However, since these letters are short, I will try to sum it all up together.  First, John gives us the circular command to love one another.  I call it circular because he writes that love is obeying God’s commands and God’s commands are that we love.  I believe that John is expressing here what Jesus about the greatest commandment.  All of God’s other commandments are just expressions of the two commandments about love.  If we truly love God and our neighbor, we will carry out all of the other laws as an expression of that love.

All three letters talk about teachers.  John’s second letter (the first of those we are looking at today) and the letter by Jude speak about those who teach false doctrines.  John’s third letter speaks of those who travel and preach to those who do not yet know the Lord.  John writes that deceptive teachers do not acknowledge that Jesus actually lived as a human being.  I will note that this comes in several forms.  Some question whether Jesus ever really existed, or claim that it is not relevant whether or not He did.  Others, claim He was just a spiritual being, or otherwise not fully human.  John writes that all such teachers are the antichrist.  Jude writes that false teachers will claim that salvation through God’s grace means that we can behave immorally.  I want to note that when Jude writes that they promote a license for immorality, I do not think he was limiting that to sexual immorality.  I believe he was suggesting that they claim a license for all sorts of sins (which sins are acceptable varies from false teacher to false teacher).  In John’s third letter he writes that we should show hospitality to those who travel about preaching to unbelievers, which connects back to what he wrote about loving one another.  He also condemns those who refuse to welcome such preachers and teach others to do likewise.  In fact, I believe John would lump those who do so in with the false and deceptive teachers he wrote about in his second letter.

December 24, 2022 Bible Study — Allowing Christ To Purify Us From Sin

Today, I am reading and commenting on  1 John 1-5.

John makes several points in this letter, which I want to touch on.  First, he writes that Christ purifies us from all sin.  I think from the context that John means two things by that.  He means that the blood which Christ shed on the Cross covers over the sins which we committed before we came to accept Jesus as our Lord, but he also means that Christ living within us leads us to not sin.  He also writes that anyone who claims to be without sin deceives themselves and does not have the truth within them.  Yet, later he writes that no one who lives in Christ continues to sin.  John also writes that if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with God in Jesus.  So, John appears to be answering those who say, “I am saved by God’s grace, so it is okay if I go on sinning,” and those who say, “Anyone who has truly accepted Christ will never sin again.”  John tells us that we should live our lives without sin, but ever time we fall into sin we can pick ourselves back up and try again to live up to God’s standard.  Every time we sin. we hurt ourselves and often others.  God calls us to love others, so we should strive as a minimum to not hurt them by our sins.  Even where our sins may not directly hurt others, it will hurt them to the degree which they love us and bringing hurt upon ourselves brings hurt to them.  So, let us strive to love others by doing that which makes their lives better and by not hurting them by sinning against them or against ourselves.  But, when we do sin, let us once more turn to God and request again that His Holy Spirit transform us.

December 23, 2022 Bible Study — God Spoke Through The Prophets In Scripture

Today, I am reading and commenting on  2 Peter 1-3.

I really like the progression which Peter points out at the beginning of this letter: that we should add goodness to our faith, and then add knowledge to goodness, then self-control to knowledge, perseverance to self-control, godliness to perseverance, mutual affection to godliness, and finally love to mutual affection.  However, I want to focus today on what Peter writes about prophetic Scripture (which is this context is ALL Scripture) and false teachers.  First, he writes that Scripture did not come about through the interpretation of those who wrote it.  Even though those who wrote the Scripture were human, their writings which have become Scripture were God speaking through them.  And there are prophets among us today through whom God speaks.  However, we must be careful because there are also false prophets.  Peter gives us two clues to identify which prophets are false.  First, he warns us that they will exercise and encourage depraved conduct which will bring the Gospel into disrepute.  Second, he tells us that they will support their teaching with made up stories.  Further Peter warns us that God will bring destruction up such prophets and the people whom they deceive, just as He brought the flood and destruction upon Sodom and Gomorrah.  However, those who resist their deception and remain faithful will be saved just as God saved Noah and Lot.  Let us live holy and godly lives as we continue to look forward to the Day of God.
