Proverbs 12:10

Today’s proverb strikes me as relevant to discussions about “animal rights”. The righteous care for their animals’ needs, while the wicked are cruel. I do not believe that animals have rights, but I do believe that, as Christians, we should care for animals and make sure that we do not cause unnecessary pain or suffering to animals which are in our power. We can be sure that those who are cruel to animals will perform other wicked acts as well.

DSCN5454

Psalm 73:1-28

The psalmist offers us a warning. He tells us that he slipped and almost lost his connection with God. He envied the wicked and proud because they seemed to do well. He started to wonder if he would not be better off to give up serving God and live as the wicked do. They seemed to him to live lives of ease, while he struggled and suffered misfortune. He tried to understand why the wicked seemed thrive. Then he went before God and met with others who serve God and realized that the wicked are on a path that leads to destruction. He realized that he had allowed bitterness and resentment tear him apart. He realized once more the joy of serving God. Let us remember this lesson so that we do not allow bitterness and resentment separate us from God. I will remember the wonderful things which God has done. I will testify to His greatness and love. I know the emptiness and pain which awaits those who turn from God and live in wickedness. No matter how pleasant their lives may appear, I do not wish to join them.

DSCN5453

Luke 9:28-50

I never noticed this before, but the story of what happened on the Mount of Transfiguration is a bit of foreshadowing of what will happen in the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus took Peter, James, and John up on the mountain to pray. While Jesus was praying, Peter, James, and John fell asleep. While they slept, Jesus met with Moses and Elijah. They missed it! They woke up on the tail-end of the conversation. When Peter saw what was going on, he wanted to stay there, but the moment was over. How often does this happen to us? We “sleep” through a moment of great blessing, then when it is all but over, we try to freeze it and artificially extend the moment. Let us remember that God has a task for us in this world and times like the Mount of Transfiguration are to strengthen us to continue that task.
All too often we strive to be the greatest, and seek to be honored as such. Jesus tells us that we should strive to be the servant of others, that we should not strive for authority. In God’s books it is those whom Man counts as the least who is counted as the greatest. I would rather be counted as great by God than by Man.

DSCN5446

Deuteronomy 18-20:20

We are warned against being seduced by the practices of those around us who do not worship God. This is a difficult challenge for us. It is difficult to resist the blandishments. It is too easy to forget the reasons behind how God calls us to behave and instead act like those around us do. Let us keep our focus on God and avoid turning to omens and signs to determine our behavior. Even those who claim to be prophesying on God’s behalf may be leading us astray. When someone claims to speak on God’s behalf, let us listen to what they say will happen. If it does not come to pass, we will know that they do not speak for God.

Proverbs 12:8-9

If you propose sensible ideas you will be admired. As time goes by, people will hold those who always suggest truly warped ideas in contempt. It is better to be someone of no account, yet sufficient beyond your needs to afford hiring a servant than to be thought a person of great account, yet not have enough food to eat.

DSCN5464

Psalm 72:1-20

Paul tells us to pray for our rulers. This psalm gives us a good idea about what we are to pray for them. Let us pray that they have a love of justice and righteousness. Let us pray that our rulers judge fairly for all, both the rich and the poor. Let us pray that they defend the poor and rescue the children of the needy. If our rulers and government officials rescue the poor and help the oppressed the land will flourish. Let us pray that the rulers and government officials which God has given us are such men. Let us live our lives so that we will gain favor with rulers that are like this.

DSCN5479

Luke 9:7-27

When word reached Herod Antipas about Jesus, Herod was confused because he knew that John the Baptist was dead. We must conclude from this that Jesus’ message was a lot like the one which John had preached, enough like it that people thought they must be the same person, even Herod. Beyond this, Luke tells us that Herod kept trying to find a way to see Jesus. Notice, Jesus actively took His message to the poor, but the rich and powerful sought Him out to hear His message. We should take a similar approach in preaching the Gospel.
Luke tells the story of the feeding of the 5,000. When the disciples asked Jesus to send the crowd away so that its members could go get some food, Jesus told them to feed the crowd. The disciples replied that they only had a small amount of food, not enough for that many people. Jesus had them sit the crowd down and begin to feed them. When they were done, not only was everyone fed, but there was more food left over than what they had started with. The lesson here is that when God sets us a task, we should not worry about whether we have the resources to complete the task. We should take the resources we have and begin the task. God will provide the resources to finish the task.

DSCN5459

Deuteronomy 16-17:20

Today’s passage describes three festivals which the people of Israel were to hold gathered together at the place which God would designate. The Passover celebration reads to me as if it is to be a family celebration, something to be celebrated as a family to bring the family closer to God (although I may be reading into the passage here). However, the other two festivals are community gatherings. They are clearly instructed to include everyone in the festival (sons and daughters, male and female servants, Levites and foreigners, widows and orphans). They are instructed to make sure that everyone has what they need to take part in these two festivals, no matter their background and no matter their resources. There are to be no outsiders, not because outsiders are excluded, but because everyone is to be included. Let us be like that today. Let us hold events that include everyone and make sure that no one feels that they cannot take part because they cannot afford the cost, or because they are not one of us.

DSCN5486

Proverbs 12:5-7

Today’s proverbs give us a basis for judging ourselves. Are the plans I make just to everyone? Or do they benefit me at the expense of others? When I give advice to others, does my advice benefit me more than the person I am advising? Does what I say encourage and support others to do things which will improve their lives? Or do I subtly encourage them to do things which will harm them? Let us make godly plans and speak righteous words.

DSCN5485

Psalm 71:1-24

This psalm is both a source of hope for me and a challenge. I have turned to God for protection. I have trusted in Him since childhood. He has always come to my rescue and saved me from my troubles. However I am challenged by the psalmist’s claim to have been an example to many. Has my life been an example to others? Have I lived a life which others look at and wish to imitate? If others have imitated my life, are they better off for it?
Let me declare God’s glory everyday. Let me never stop praising Him. Yes, I will follow the psalmist’s example:

I will tell everyone about your righteousness.
All day long I will proclaim your saving power,
though I am not skilled with words.

DSCN5484

Luke 8:40-9:6

I love the story of the healing of Jairus’ daughter and the woman who touched the hem of Jesus’ cloak. There are so many different lessons for us here. I love the woman’s example of faith with her belief that if she could just touch Jesus’ cloak she could be healed. What struck me today was Jesus’ message to Jairus to never give up hope. A messenger came to Jairus to tell him that there was no point in bothering Jesus any longer, his daughter was dead. Jesus answer to Jairus was to tell him to have faith. Let us continue to have faith, even when the battle appears to be over and all seems lost. I will place my hope in Jesus and have faith that He can bring healing and life, even in the midst of death.

Deuteronomy 13-15:23

This passage contains a warning against idolatry. It reminds us that there will be different types of temptation to worship something other than God. Some will make predictions that will come true, some will perform wonders designed to entice us to rely on something other than God. Despite the promises and the wonders they perform in the service of these false gods, none of them things will be able to provide the fulfillment and salvation that comes from worshiping and serving the true God. There will be others who will attempt to seduce us into the worship of things other than God. They will offer us pleasures and entertainments, but none of those pleasures or entertainments will be able to replace the joy that comes from serving God. Some will be secretive and subtle. They will attempt to trick us into worshiping something other than God. Let us examine their teachings with care so that we will know whether what they teach truly comes from God, or from another. Let us engage our hearts, souls, and minds in worshiping God.

Proverbs 12:4

I will echo the sentiments of this passage and recommend that any single man think closely about it when choosing a wife. I am grateful to God that He gave me the former rather than the latter.

DSCN5363

Psalm 70:1-5

This psalm is definitely my prayer today. I pray that God come quickly to my rescue for I face great troubles. I know that those who search for God will be filled with joy. He is my helper and my savior. I pray that He relieves my trouble before I am overcome with despair.

DSCN5367

Luke 8:22-39

I noticed something about the story of the demon-possessed man in the region of the Gerasenes (or Gadarenes) that I never saw before. When Jesus got out of the boat the demon-possessed man came to meet Him. Jesus did not go seeking him out. Having initiated the interaction with Jesus, the demon-possessed man proceeded to ask Jesus why He was interfering with him. Isn’t this something we see a lot in this world? Non-believers confront us about our beliefs and then accuse us of wanting to interfere in their lives? However, notice that when this happened to Jesus, He did not back off of His beliefs. He confronted the demons head on. In the same way, when unbelievers confront us about our beliefs we should stand firm on what we believe and not back down.

DSCN5369

Deuteronomy 11-12:32

The message of this passage is to those who have seen God’s mighty acts and experienced His discipline. If we love Him with all of our heart and obey His instructions, God will bless us throughout our lives. Let us not be deceived and turn away from God. There is a challenge for me in this passage. I will strive to commit myself to the words of God. I will talk about them when I am at home and when I am on the road, when I am going to bed and when I am getting up. I will strive to speak the words which God has given me at all times. We have been given the choice between a blessing and a curse. If we follow God’s instructions we will be blessed, but if we rebel against God we will be cursed.

Proverbs 12:2-3

A society becomes stable and strong through the righteous acts of the godly. Wickedness only results in ever-increasing instability. God shows favor to those who do good and condemnation to those who plot evil.

DSCN5360

Psalm 69:19-36

Wealth and bounty will become a snare to those who lose sight of God and His will, those who do not have pity on the suffering of others. God does not desire our offerings out of our excess. He desires for us to praise His name and honour Him. God hears the cries of those in need and will come to their aid. If we are in need we can rely on His aid. If we are not in need, let us be the hands by which that aid is delivered.

DSCN5351

Luke 8:4-21

I have talked about how the parable of the sower always makes me fear that I am the third type of soil. It feels so much like I allow the concerns about this life crowd out the word of God. Am I truly producing a bountiful harvest for God? Or has the word of God been crowded out by the cares and pleasures of this life?
I realized one thing today as I read the parable of the lamp. If God’s light is lit on our hearts, we may try to hide it, but God will take away the bowl which we may try to place ourselves in. He will come and get us out from under the bed. He will place us on a table, or a lamp-stand, so that everyone who comes by will see out light. I will resist the temptation to turn down the lamp inside me when I find myself in public view.

DSCN5361

Deuteronomy 9-10:22

When we receive good things from God, let us remember that our success is not because we are such good people. If we turn from God and behave wickedly, He will take these good things from us. Let us not forget our sins and rebellion against God. God is a great God and He will not show partiality. I will dedicate myself to doing as God requires of me (even though I know that I will only succeed through His grace and Spirit). I will love Him and serve Him with all of my heart, soul, and being. I will strive to imitate God by showing love to the foreigners who live amongst us, meeting their needs to the best of my ability (as God gives me the strength and guides my hand).

March 27, 2014 Bible Study — How Much Forgiveness Do I Need?

I am using One Year Bible Online for my daily Bible study. For today, One Year Bible Online links here. I write this daily blog because it helps me pay closer attention to the Scripture as I read it. Before I started writing this blog I had trouble disciplining myself to read the Bible regularly, let alone every day. I hope that by posting my thoughts I can encourage others to regularly read the Bible (and perhaps my thoughts will give someone encouragement in their walk with Christ). In order to make it possible for others to use my blog as part of their daily Bible Study (the hubris of that idea never ceases to amaze me), I read the passages and write my thoughts a day, or more in advance. If you have any thoughts or comments regarding these verses or what I have written about them, please post them.

DSCN5307

Proverbs 12:1

In order to learn, you must embrace being corrected and disciplined when you are wrong. Anyone who despises being corrected is both ignorant and stupid.

DSCN5315

Psalm 69:1-18

This psalm reflects how I feel right now. I am overwhelmed by my troubles and I beg of God that He rescue me. I have been foolish and made many mistakes. I acknowledge my sins before God. I have no choice because He knows them all. I ask that God not allow those who trust in Him be ashamed because of me. Oh God, do not allow those who honor you to be humiliated by anything I say or do!

DSCN5317

Luke 7:36-8:3

There are a lot of different takes on this story of the woman who washed Jesus’ feet with her tears and with perfume. There is a lot to be learned from it. However, the question that struck me is that in reality there is no practical difference in the amount of forgiveness the Pharisee and the woman in this story needed from God. The difference was in their perception of their need. Or to put it another way, if I am drowning in the ocean, it doesn’t matter if I am 1 mile from shore or 100 miles from shore. In either case, if someone does not come along and pull me out of the water, I will die.
Simon the Pharisee perceived himself as needing just a little bit of help in order to be righteous. The woman who anointed Jesus perceived herself as being completely unable to be righteous. So, the question is how do I perceive myself? Do I understand that without Jesus, righteousness is completely out of my reach? The answer is, “Not always”. Yet, I know that it is.

DSCN5347

Deuteronomy 7-8:20

God did not choose us as His servants because we are stronger, or smarter, or faster, or in any other way better than anybody else. He chose us because He loves us. We were chosen by God to serve Him and if we do that He will bless us. However, we cannot compromise on God’s principles. We cannot meet those who do not believe in God halfway. We must not worship their gods or serve their goals.

Proverbs 11:29-31

Righteous behavior provides life enhancing benefits, not just to those who perform it but also to those around them. If those who do good receive what is due them for what they have done, how much more will those who do wicked and evil things?

DSCN5339

Psalm 68:19-35

I love reading from the psalms each day. The first two verses today (verse 19 and 20) are a wonderful reminder of how God cares for us:

Praise the Lord; praise God our savior!
For each day he carries us in his arms.
Our God is a God who saves!
The Sovereign Lord rescues us from death.

But He will destroy those who choose to be His enemies. I will tell everyone about God’s power before it comes to overwhelm them. All the earth will bow in submission to God. I choose to do so, those who refuse will find themselves crushed by their rebellion until they have no longer have a choice.

DSCN5341

Luke 7:11-35

Luke tells us here about Jesus raising the widow’s son. This story is different from most of the miracles which the Gospels give us about Jesus’ miracles. No one approached Jesus and asked Him to help the woman or her son. Rather Jesus saw the funeral procession and felt compassion for the woman. We are called to the same sort of action. When we see those in need and we have the ability to help, let us have compassion on them and offer them what help we can.
Shortly after this, John the Baptist sent two of his disciples to ask Jesus if He was the Messiah. Rather than answering their question directly, Jesus tells them to report to John what they had seen of Jesus’ ministry and let John judge for himself. We should judge the ministries we see by the same standard which Jesus used. First He told them, the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life. So, the first thing we should expect to see in a ministry which is serving God, which is a Christian ministry, is that people’s needs are being met, especially those needs which seem the most insurmountable. Are miracles happening around us? If not, we need to ask the Holy Spirit to move in us (I do not necessarily mean things which unbelievers would view as supernatural, although we should be open to that as well). However, helping others is not enough, Jesus finished His list of things for John’s disciples to report with one more thing. He finished up the list to be reported to John with this, the most telling, “…and the Good News is being preached to the poor.” It is not enough to do good things for those who are suffering, we need to proclaim the Good News of God’s Kingdom as well. We need to meet people’s needs AND we need to proclaim the Gospel. It is not enough to just meet people’s needs. It is not enough to proclaim the Gospel. We are called to do both.

DSCN5292

Deuteronomy 5-6:25

This passage contains the Ten Commandments, which represent the core of Jewish and Christian understanding of our responsibility to God. Moses emphasized the importance of committing ourselves to God and doing His will. There is a great summary of what we are called to in verses 4-6 of chapter 6. I strive daily to fulfill this command, to love God with all my heart, with all my soul, with all my mind, and with all of my strength. When I succeed in doing this everything else in this life comes easily. It is so easy to be distracted by the potential pleasures and joys of this life that I forget to concentrate on God and His will for me.

Proverbs 11:28

If we trust in our wealth and material possessions we will fall. Wealth is only of use as long as others value it. Those who are righteous will always thrive because its value does not depend on others.

DSCN5286

Psalm 68:1-18

The day is coming when God will rise up and scatter His enemies. In that day the godly will rejoice. God’s presence will make them glad and fill them with joy. God is father to the fatherless and the defender of widows. He gives the lonely families who will love and care for them. When God gives the word against His enemies He does not need to send an army to retrieve the plunder. Kings and armies will flee God’s wrath and noncombatants will gather the plunder.

DSCN5321

Luke 6:39-7:10

Luke continues on the theme about judging others. Rather than focus on what others are doing wrong, we should look to correct our own failings. If we want to think of ourselves as good people, we need to say and do good things. If we are prickly and people who get close to us tend to get hurt by what we do and/or say, then we are thorn-bushes or brambles, not fig trees or grape vines. We should judge ourselves by the fruit we produce. Elsewhere this passage is presented in a way that I heard summarized as telling us that we are not to judge others, but we are supposed to be fruit inspectors. I think that such is an accurate way to summarize the similar passage in Matthew. However, Luke is telling us that we should be concerned with the results of our own actions, not those of others.

DSCN5356

Deuteronomy 4:1-49

Moses continued his recap of the Israelites travel through the wilderness. He reminded them several times not to forget what they have seen God do. That reminder stands for us as well. Let us not forget to tell the generations which come after us the things which we have seen God do. As I read this passage today, I am reminded of a book that my parents encouraged me to read when I was young. The book was called the “Martyrs Mirror”. This is a book is an account of the stories and testimonies of many who died as martyrs in service of God. There was a time when almost all Mennonite homes had a copy of this book. The importance of the Martyrs Mirror is that it is a reminder of what God has done down through the ages. We need to recount to the next generation the stories of what we have seen God do, and the stories which those who went before us told us.

DSCN5268

Psalm 67:1-7

This psalm reminds us to praise and bless God because He has blessed us by providing for our needs. Yet it also carries the reminder that as we praise and obey God, we will be blessed by Him even further.

DSCN5269

Luke 6:12-38

Luke tells us that people came from all over to hear Jesus preach and to be healed by Him. In addition, he puts a phrase hear which reminds me of the woman who was healed when she touched the hem of his robe. “Everyone tried to touch him, because healing power went out from him, and he healed everyone.” (verse 19) Then we have Luke’s take on the beatitudes. These are more troubling than Matthew’s version. Jesus said that those who were poor, hungry, and sorrowful are blessed because they will inherit the Kingdom of God, be fed, and experience joy. The scary part is that Jesus then goes on to tell those who are experiencing the good life will experience sorrow and misery in the future. I do not think this second part is a promise, but rather it is a warning (at least I hope so) because of what He says next.
Jesus transitions from His warnings of sorrow by saying, “But to you who are listening…” He tells us to love our enemies, do good to those who hate us, bless and pray for those who treat us badly. We are to do to others as we would like them to do to us. It is not enough to do good things to those who can/will return the favor. We need to be nice, do good things for, those who will not and/or cannot be nice and/or do good things in return. God has been merciful to us, as undeserving as we were, and are. If we expect God to reward us, we must be merciful to those who do not deserve it, and will not deserve it. Let us work to imitate God’s goodness. Jesus tells us that we should not hold others to a higher standard than we wish to be judged by ourselves. If we wish to be forgiven, we need to forgive others. I just realized that there is an implicit understanding of human nature here. Those who are unwilling to forgive others are those who think of themselves as not needing forgiveness. The measure by which we give to others (in forgiveness, good will, and material goods) is the measure by which we will be rewarded. Let us give to others generously.

DSCN5275

Deuteronomy 2-3:29

Moses continued his account of the time the Israelites spent in the wilderness. He recounts how God instructed them to avoid conflict with both the Edomites and the Moabites (descendants of Esau and Lot respectively). Moses then told of how he sent messengers to Sihon, the king of Heshbon, requesting permission to pass through his lands as they had through the lands of the Edomites and the Moabites. Sihon rejected Moses request and attacked the Israelites. I am reminded as I read this that God will provide for us. There will be obstacles in the path that God sends us on, but God will remove those obstacles. Let us not become hostile towards those who do not share our goals until they take action against us. Even then, we need to rely on God to defeat them for us.

Today’s psalm is on the same theme as yesterday’s psalm. I love reading psalms like today’s, they make me want to sing (which is not necessarily a good thing, as those who have heard me sing are aware).

Come and see what our God has done,
what awesome miracles he performs for people!

I cried out to God for help and he answered me. I confessed my sins and He rescued me from my troubles. God listened to me when I cried for help. He has tried me and put me through difficult times. God will purify me like silver and I will praise Him.

DSCN5229

Luke 5:29-6:11

Levi, the tax collector become disciple, held a banquet for his friends to meet Jesus. The religious teachers asked Jesus’ disciples why He hung out with such low-lifes?
Jesus answered them by telling them that He had not come to reach the righteous, but rather He had come to reach the sinners. There are two questions we need to ask ourselves. Do we consider ourselves the righteous, or the sinners? The second is, are we Levi, introducing sinners to Jesus? Or are we the Pharisees, condemning Jesus for hanging out with the sinners?
Luke follows this up with three more stories which show us ways in which the religious teachers did not understand how God desires that we behave. They were more caught up in following the “rules” than in caring for their fellow-man.

DSCN5233

Deuteronomy 1:1-46

Here at the beginning of the book of Deuteronomy, or “Second Law”, Moses summarizes the events that happened from when the people of Israel left Mt Sinai until they attempted to invade the Promised Land after initially refusing to enter. First, Moses recounted how he appointed judges over sections of the people in order to distribute the load of governing the Israelites, because it was too big of a task for one man to do by himself. This is an important lesson for leaders of any group as it grows in size, there needs to be leaders over subsets of the group. Notice that these judges were not just subordinates who took part of the load. They were each responsible for a specific group of people.
Moses then tells of how when they arrived at the border of the Promised Land, he encouraged them to invade immediately. However, they asked him to send scouts in to scout out the land first. Moses recounts that this seemed like a good idea to him, so he did sent in twelve scouts, one from each tribe. The scouts reported back that it was a good land, but they also reported that the people of the land were powerful. Moses recounted here how the people were afraid to enter the land despite all that God had done for them starting in Egypt. How often are we afraid to do what God calls us to do?

This passage reminds us that marriage is an economic partnership. We need to teach our young people this fact and encourage them to consider the economic factors when they are choosing a spouse. There are other factors which they must be taught to take into account, but the young do not naturally think about the economic consequences of their decisions.
